Russia proposes continental margin extension
On Dec. 20, Russian officials submitted an extension
of the country's continental margin to the United Nations Commission on the
Limits of the Continental Shelf. This is the first such proposal to the United
Nation's Law of the Sea Convention, and will further pressure the United States
to take similar actions.
The United Nations will consider the Russian submission during the tenth session
of the U.N. Commission held in New York from
March 25 to April 12 2002. The submission requests outer limits of the continental
margin of the Russian Federation beyond 200 nautical miles from the shore. Read
