Did you know? “Plutoed” is word of the year

“Plutoed” is the 2006 Word of the Year, thanks to the planet’s demotion to “dwarf planet” by the International Astronomical Union earlier in the year. The American Dialect Society chose “plutoed” in a runoff against “climate canary,” which the society defines as an organism or species whose poor health or declining numbers hint at a larger environmental catastrophe on the horizon. To “Pluto” is to demote or devalue someone or something. In a separate vote, “Pluto” was the 2006 name of the year, and “climate canary” was the most useful word of 2006, according to the dialect society.
